While many fans of Black Butler see Grell as a gay character, it is heavily implied throughout the anime and suggested more explicitly in the manga that Grell identifies as a transgender woman. Shonen autors are usually very conservatives on their character writing, even tough you can see transexual/gay characters in some shonens like in one piece. But Oda put those characters more like a comic relief than anything else. A particularly delightful aspect of Black Clover is watching its massive cast of characters interact. Whether they are clearly in love, close friends with romantic potential, or even rivals, fans enjoy taking these connections and turning them into ships.

How other characters react to the mannerisms of a new Black Clover villain demonstrates the best way that a manga can be more inclusive of a more diverse population in general. In chapter of Black Clover , Lucius Zogratis' Paladin Yrul exhibits a speech impediment that results in him having to repeat the first syllable of certain words no more than once. But none of Yrul's opponents, including Asta, his devil partner Liebe or Yami's sister Ichika comment or even react to his stutter as though he was speaking normally.

What's so compelling about Asta, Liebe, and Ichika's decision to ignore Yrul's stuttering is that the Paladin doesn't deserve any kindness. When he's tripping over certain words, their opponent is specifically mocking their skills or lack thereof and directly calls out Ichika for being pathetic even though she's supposedly one of her country's strongest fighters. Yrul also stutters when attempting to expose Asta to his deepest fears, a goal that results in Asta inadvertently admitting he's not stronger than Black Clover 's Yuno.

Of course, the prospect of Asta retaliating to Yrul's mockery by specifically pointing out his speech impediment would seem uncalled-for and overly insensitive, especially for his character, but Yrul's own cruelty, especially after traumatizing Ichika so thoroughly in the previous chapters, makes the prospect of him being ridiculed more palatable or understandable, even though it would still be inappropriate.

But the fact that Asta acts as though nothing out of the ordinary is occurring positions him as an ideal hero and for him espousing a mindset that everyone should aspire to and that is indicative of what a perfect world would look like where no discrimination exists. Although from a completely different series, this type of depiction that portrays an idealized version of humanity is most effectively captured in Schitt's Creek.

Even though the story transpires in a place that some would consider less accepting of certain lifestyles and people, everyone in the eponymous town acts positively to a gay relationship and then completely embraces their eventual marriage. Though it's important to not ignore the struggle that many people face, there's also room for worlds where differences are accepted.

Black Clover having its heroes not comment on an enemy's speech impediment it another example of this.

How Black Clover tackles the inclusivity in this particular case greatly contrasts with the entire premise of Ranking of Kings , which explores how a young prince named Bojji overcomes adversity that comes as a result of him being quite small and deaf, the latter of which affects his speech. Unlike how Yrul's condition is ignored in Black Clover , Bojji is openly ridiculed. So rather than imagining an ideal world, Ranking of Kings shows how Bojji is more than capable of being king despite his unique challenges and how he is not defined by them.

Even though Black Clover is ending , hopefully Yuki Tabata will continue to explore this idealized world in some capacity like Ranking of Kings and Schitt's Creek. Sign in now.
